Everyone can appreciate a good red wine.  However, red wine is typically stereotyped as a wintertime beverage, reserved for cool nights around the fire.  Not anymore!

We’re here to tip that on it’s head.  What’s the point in only being able to enjoy your favorite red wines in the colder months?  You could be enjoying it all year round. We are going to show you how to enjoy red wine on even the hottest of summer afternoons, by using our very own Broke Estate Barbera to make refreshing and delicious cocktails.  Perfect for your next summertime event.

For a more detailed look into Barbera and its characteristics, check out our previous blog post by Alex, but to keep it short Barbera is perfect for cocktails because of its light, fruity flavour and low tannins that will shine through any cocktail mixers and maintain that amazing fruity flavour. This recipe is also great for those who don’t enjoy the overly sweet cocktails normally on offer.  You want something with a bit for of a bit more of a mature flavour, while keeping it refreshing and vibrant.

So lets get into it!

Broke Estate Barbera & Gin Tonic

To start off, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Broke Estate Barbera
  • Gin
  • Tonic water
  • 1 fresh orange
(like most things in life, the better the quality of the ingredients, the better the end result!)

  1. You will want to start off by putting a decent amount of ice into a glass
  2. To this, add 2 parts Barbera and 1 part Gin
  3. Top up with tonic water to taste, we recommend around 2 parts
  4. Cut up the orange and add a slice to the rim of the glass as a garnish to make yourself feel fancy (you can also squeeze some of the orange juice into the cocktail to add more of a citrus flavor)
  5. Give it a stir and enjoy!
